Please join us for the Brinsley Coffin Walk this Saturday 22nd July 2017. We’ll be walking from Brinsley Church to Greasley Church across the fields, to commemorate the journey that Brinsley families had to make to bury their loved ones before the village had its own Church and burial ground.
We’ll be setting off from St James’s Church, Brinsley at 9.30 a.m., so please join us for this unique event to commemorate part of Brinsley’s history and heritage. Dogs and children are welcome on the walk, which is approx. 3 miles over mostly even ground. The coffin will be carried by a team of willing volunteers from Gillotts and from Steve Soult Ltd, who produced the specially designed coffin engraved with images of Brinsley Headstocks.
The coffin walk wasn’t always a solemn affair – there were special stones along the way where the family would stop and rest the coffin, and raise a glass to their loved one. We’ll be looking out for any of these stones, and wearing lilac to bring an element of the celebration of life to proceedings, as many modern day families do. If you’d like to join us in wearing something lilac too that would be fantastic.
